The Great Sand Dunes were incredibly breathtaking and so much fun (although exhausting) to hike. The park contains the tallest sand dunes in North America, rising to a maximum height of 750 feet from the floor of the San Luis Valley on the western base of the Sangre de Cristo Range. May was a perfect time to go because the winds weren’t too strong and the temperature wasn’t too high.

The supplemental hikes we did to Zapata Falls and the Mosca Pass trail were also so much fun and a nice break from the wind. Very cool to see the waterfall completely frozen!

On the drive back to Aspen we made an impromptu decision to see the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and even in our short visit, it was a pit stop we were thrilled to make. The canyon was once considered
”impenetrable” and the welcome video at the visitor center tells an incredible story of the first men to successfully float down the canyon’s river. Can’t wait to go back!
