mykonos
Mykonos is the Greek island I’m glad to have seen the one time but have no plans to return to—even in the shoulder season the place was packed with tourists! I did learn that waking up to be in town by about 8AM meant nearly empty streets and perfect photo ops (great to do on all trips, really). Because most people are up until sunrise on this island, you don’t have to be up at the crack of dawn to have the place to yourself.
We were so excited to meet up with Laura, Tina, and Shandi for the first part of our Cyclades adventure at the Mykonos Essence Hotel. I quickly familiarized myself with driving a tiny stick-shift car down impossibly narrow streets, which eventually became pretty fun. We made our way to lunch at Kostantis at Ornos Beach where everyone had some version of lamb: souvlaki, chop, and Kleftiko. The weather on Mykonos was mostly grey and rainy so we didn’t have much quality beach time but we did try to visit Platis Gialos, Elia, and Scorpios. However, it being the shoulder season these were mostly not fully open yet or closed completely.
During our first night exploring the streets of Mykonos Town and Little Venice we did a bit of shopping, had dinner at Nice n Easy, and bar hopped visiting Skandinavian Bar, Argo Bar and Jackie O’. After dancing our hearts out at Jackie O’ we picked up some gyros at Souvlaki Story which were extremely delicious. The following day we had an early lunch at Andreas & Maria, an incredible recommendation from our server at Nice n Easy, which served up a mix of traditional Mykonian food and the Venetian classics that influence the area. We had one of our favorite saganaki of the trip—saganaki is a fried cheese dish staple and is a definite MUST! We enjoyed early dinner at Nikolas Taverna after a cloudy beach day and then had second dinner at Pasta Fresca Barkia which were both very tasty. For our final hours on the island we woke up and took lots of photos, saw the Kato Mili windmills, and enjoyed an extremely yummy breakfast at Popolo Cafe where I tried my first freddo cappuccino—a super chilled, super foamy iced cappuccino.
All in all, we had an ideal Mykonos experience and now can focus on other Greek islands on any future visits!
