joburg
After a flawless, first-ever Business Class flight our group arrived in Johannesburg for our first site inspection and stay at 54 on Bath, a beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Joburg. We shared a delicious meal together and then enjoyed the luxury of our rooms; the king bed was like a cloud and the bathtub was oh, so relaxing.
We left the following morning for Kruger National Park but returned to Joburg before our return flight back to the states for one night at the Fairlawns Boutique Hotel. Before heading back to the airport, Deborah and I had a full day to tour Joburg and Soweto with Dr. Gavin Spowart. These are some things we saw and learned:
The Regina Mundi church where many of the anti-Apartheid meetings were held
Vilakazi Street to see the Mandela House
Much of Soweto is now considered middle class, there is only one section that is still comprised of shanties
The success of Richard Maponya; we also visited the Maponya Mall
That Joburg has as much rainfall as London and more lightning strikes than anywhere else in the world
I wish I had more time to explore Joburg but I did enjoy the few hours I did spend there and hope to return some day.
