If your closet is not quite up to Carrie Bradshaw standards, if you live in a small space in a big city, or if you just need extra hanging space this is an easy and cheap DIY project to take on. Since I already had a curtain rod to use, I only spent about $5 on the rope twine and ceiling hook screws; here is a great guide on how to install the hooks.

Equipment needed:

  • Drill with ¼’’ bit

  • Hanging rod

  • 2 ceiling hook screws

  • Rope twine or something to suspend the rod with

  • Stud Finder

  • Scissors

Once I determined that the dimensions of where I wanted to hang my curtain rod lined up with two ceiling beams I was able to drill a couple of evenly placed holes into the ceiling and screw the hooks right in. If you don’t have a beam you’re going to have to drill a bigger hole to fit the anchor through the drywall.

The hooks I bought can each hold up to 50 lbs, make sure you get the right sized hooks for your needs, if you’re using a very heavy rod or hanging lots of heavy clothes you will be needing some heavier-duty hooks. I braided very long sections of twine together (probably about 6 feet) then secured the braided rope to the ceiling hook and wrapped both loose ends several times around an end of curtain rod before knotting just above the rod and then bringing the remainder of the rope up again to the top to secure just under the hook which created four braided strands to secure each end. I repeated this on both ends, mindful of everything being level and viola!
